People

The People section stores travel, passport and medical details for everyone in your party — locally on your device, never sent to a server. It lives in the bottom navigation bar alongside Cruises and Settings.

Locking and unlocking

People is protected by an extra layer of authentication on top of the optional App lock. Every time you open People — or a person's detail screen — Cruise Buddy asks for your device biometrics (Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint) or PIN/passcode before showing any data.

If the prompt is cancelled or fails, you'll see a People is locked screen with an Unlock People button. Tap it to try again.

Why the extra lock?

People contains passport numbers, medical notes, insurance details and emergency contacts — information you wouldn't want visible if someone picked up an unlocked phone. The extra prompt applies only to People; the rest of Cruise Buddy is unaffected.

The people list

Once unlocked, the screen shows every person you've added as a card. Each card displays:

  • A circle avatar with the person's initial.
  • Their display name.
  • Nationality, insurance provider and passport expiry date, when entered — shown as a subtitle.

Cards are listed alphabetically by display name.

Searching

A Search people field at the top of the list filters cards as you type. The search covers display name, passport number and insurance provider.

Swipe actions

Swipe a card horizontally to access quick actions without opening the record:

  • Swipe left → right — opens a delete confirmation. Deleting a person removes their record and any documents stored against them. This cannot be undone.
  • Swipe right → left — opens the edit sheet for the person.

Adding a person

Tap the Add Person floating action button. A bottom sheet slides up with all the fields organised into three groups:

Basic details

  • Display name (required — this is what appears on cards and chips throughout the app)
  • First name
  • Last name

Travel Docs

  • Nationality (suggested from the bundled GOV.UK nationality list as you type, while still allowing custom values)
  • Passport number
  • Passport issue date
  • Passport expiry date

Medical

  • Medical insurance provider
  • Insurance policy / reference
  • Insurance phone
  • Allergies
  • Medical notes
  • Emergency contact name
  • Emergency contact phone

Notes

  • General notes

Tap Save to create the record. You're taken straight to the new person's detail screen.

Import from Contacts

To save typing, tap Import from Contacts at the top of the Add Person sheet (it appears only when adding a new person, not when editing one). Cruise Buddy opens your phone's contact picker; choose someone and their display name, first name, last name, phone and email are filled in for you. You can then add passport, medical and other details before saving.

The first time you use this, your phone asks permission to access Contacts. If you decline, Cruise Buddy shows "Contact access was not granted" and you can still add the person manually — grant access later in your device settings if you change your mind. Contacts are read only when you tap this button and are never uploaded anywhere; only the fields above are copied into the new person.

Person detail screen

Tap a card to open a person's full record. The detail screen has three tabs.

Overview tab

Shows a summary card with:

  • Display name, first name, last name
  • Nationality
  • Emergency contact name and phone
  • Notes

Only fields that have a value are shown; empty fields are hidden.

Travel Docs tab

Shows passport details:

  • Nationality
  • Passport number
  • Issue date and expiry date

The Nationality field is backed by Cruise Buddy's bundled GOV.UK nationality reference data, last verified against the source updated on 29 October 2025. You can pick a suggested value or keep typing a custom value if the wording you need is not listed.

Below that is the Documents section. Tap the upload floating action button to attach a PDF or image — Cruise Buddy makes a local copy. Documents are shown as a list with the original filename and type. Tap a document to open it in the system viewer. Tap the delete icon on a document row to remove it (the local copy is also removed).

This means one insurance PDF can cover multiple cruises and multiple travellers without uploading the same file repeatedly. Covered travellers are suggested from the people assigned to the selected cruise or cruises.

Travel insurance documents show warning cards when the policy is expired or due to expire soon. Expired travel insurance is moved into an Expired section in the Travel Docs tab so it stays visible without being mixed in with current documents.

Documents are shown with the original filename, type, linked cruises and covered travellers where available. Tap a document to open it in the system viewer. Tap the delete icon on a document row to remove it (the local copy is also removed).

Use this section for passport scans, visa documents, e-ticket PDFs, travel insurance and any other travel paperwork for this person.

Medical tab

Shows insurance and medical details:

  • Insurance provider
  • Policy / reference number
  • Insurance phone
  • Allergies
  • Medical notes
  • Emergency contact name and phone
  • Notes

Again, only fields with a value are displayed.

Editing a person

From the detail screen, tap the edit (pencil) icon in the app bar. The same add/edit bottom sheet opens, pre-filled with the existing data. Change any fields and tap Save.

You can also swipe right-to-left on a card in the people list to open the edit sheet directly.

Deleting a person

Open the delete confirmation by:

  • Swiping left-to-right on a card in the list, or
  • Tapping the delete option from within the edit sheet.

The confirmation dialog names the person and warns that their local documents will also be deleted.

How People connects to Cruises

People integrates with the rest of the app in two ways.

Party size on the Overview tab

When you assign people to a cruise (in the Basics step of the add/edit wizard), the Party size tile on the Overview tab shows each person as a tappable chip. Tapping a chip opens that person's detail screen directly.

Passengers on flights

On the Travel tab, each flight record has an optional Passengers field. You can pick one or more people from your list and they'll appear as chips on the flight tile. This makes it easy to see at a glance who is on which flight.

Assigning people to a cruise

To link people to a cruise, open the cruise's edit wizard (Edit from the cruise action menu) and go to the Basics step. The Assigned people section lists everyone currently linked. Tap Add traveller to pick from your People list. The traveller count updates automatically to reflect the number of assigned people.

People you add to the Assigned people section also appear in the passengers picker for flights on that cruise.
